Math - Last week, we spent some time reviewing the division strategies we learned before the holiday break. The students then learned how to use repeated subtraction and number lines to solve division facts. This week we will continue to work on division strategies such as halving and using strip diagrams.
Reading - Last week, we learned about the differences between a biography and auto-biography. We also worked on identifying the theme within a biography. Finally, students chose a biography and started to read. This week, students will spend time collecting facts about the person’s early life and their accomplishments, as well as identify character traits that describe that person. The students will then put all of their facts on a poster to share what they have learned.
Writing - Last week, the students started to plan and learned how to format a letter to me about their favorite holiday tradition. This week, students will write their draft, then revise and edit their letters.
Science - Last week, we started our unit on soil formation. Students observed how weathering affects rocks and studied the difference between weathering and erosion. This week, students will have an opportunity to observe soil and identify what soil consists of. At the end of the week, we will begin to discuss Natural Resources.
Social Studies - Last week, we had a great discussion about the reasons people establish communities and the various needs of a community. We also discussed how different land forms affect the development of a community. This week, students will develop their new community. They will have to take the climate, natural resources, and the needs of their community into consideration.
