Math: We wrapped up our unit on geometry and area, and students were given their assessment over this unit last week. It was a long unit – and I am very proud of all of my students for their hard work on the test!
This week we are shifting our focus back to multiplication and division. Students will be learning strategies to solve the last multiplication and division facts (9s, 3s, 6s, and 7s) and applying them to single-step and multi-step problems.
Since it is the second semester, it is that time of year that we begin to apply our understanding of multiplication to the memorization of these facts. We have started multiplication fluency tests in class a few times a week. Since we have learned the strategies and rationale behind multiplication, it is imperative that students begin to memorize their multiplication facts. This makes it much easier for third graders to apply their knowledge of their multiplication facts to problem solving. This is a very important skill and I ask that all students be practicing their facts EVERY NIGHT for math homework. Students will know what facts they are on.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MATH KITS TO BE COMING HOME AFTER THE LONG WEEKEND.
Reading: This week we are shifting back to non-fiction texts. Students will be reading non-fiction texts and reviewing skills that apply to their understanding of these texts. A big part of this week we will also focus on context clues, and how to determine the meaning of an unknown word in a text. This is a very important skill for students, to help them when they get to a word they may not understand while reading.
Writing: This week we are practicing synonyms and antonyms. We will begin talking about our next writing project as well, which will be country research!
Our spelling words this week are all centered around suffixes. We are focusing on words with the –less and –ness suffix endings.
Science: We are learning about weather this week! Students will be reviewing the different tools that meteorologists use to predict and determine the weather, as well as other weather-related vocabulary. Students will be looking at the weather in Austin, TX and comparing it to the weather in New York City!
