Math - This week in math we are beginning to study place value. We will learn to express numbers in word form and expanded form, round, and locate numbers on a number line.
Reading - This week in reading we will begin to analyze characters in stories we are reading to determine what kind of character traits they demonstrate. We will also analyze characters in the beginning and end of stories we are reading and make observations about how and why the characters change.
Last week we started our vocabulary homework. Each week, students will be given 8 vocabulary words. Each word must be used correctly in a quality sentence of at least 7 words. This homework is due on Friday. On Friday, students will be tested in two ways. First, students will be asked to spell 5 of the words correctly. Students will need to know how to spell all 8 words because they will not know which 5 words will be tested. Secondly, students will need to know the definitions of the words and be able to use two of the words correctly in quality sentences of at least 7 words.
Writing - This week in writing we will continue to work on our personal narratives. We’ve learned good strategies for coming up with ideas for our personal-narrative stories. This week, we are learning how to take our story ideas, narrow them down to very small (seed) moments, and begin writing our first drafts.
Science - This week in Science we will continue our study of matter and how it is affected by heat. We will also study mixtures and how they can be separated.
Planner - All third graders are expected to read at least 100 minutes each week. Students may read to self, to someone else (sibling), or ask a parent to read to them. Students are also expected to practice math at least 50 minutes per week. Students will record their reading and math minutes in their planner each night.
Dismissal - If your after school dismissal plan changes, please notify the front office as soon as possible, so that they can communicate the change to me. You may also email me.
Absences - If your son or daughter is absent, please send a note when he or she returns to school. You may also call, email me, or use the on-line absence form found on the home page of the Caraway Elementary website.
